Short answer: In the US, the B58 is in the BMW 340i, 440i, M240i, 540i, 640i GT, 740i, X3 M40i and X4 M40i (Gen 1), then the M340i, M440i, G42 M240i, Z4 M40i, X5/X6/X7 40i, 840i and every Toyota GR Supra 3.0 (Gen 2). The INEOS Grenadier petrol has one too. From 2023, the 740i, X7, X5, X6 and 540i moved to Gen 3. Outside the US, add the M140i and the Morgan Plus Six.

I'm Gleb Blekher, owner of B58 Racing in Dallas, TX. Both of my own B58 builds were Gen 1. The question we get most often isn't "what should I buy?" It's "does my car even have a B58, and which one?" This page answers that. The years below are the ones our car picker and VIN lookup use, so they match the fitment you see on every part.
How the B58 generations work
BMW's B58 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. It has come in three main generations:
- Gen 1 (B58B30M0): about 2015–2019, F-chassis cars and early G-chassis cars.
- Gen 2 (B58TU: B58B30M1 and B58B30O1): the 2018 technical update. 350 bar fuel, single timing chain, split cooling. The M1 makes 335 hp and the O1 makes 382 hp.
- Gen 3 (B58B30M2): from 2022, with port injection added. Many earlier parts don't fit.

Two cars here catch people out. The F22 M240i kept the Gen 1 engine all the way through 2021, long after other models updated. And the 2017–2019 G30 540i is a G-chassis car with a Gen 1 engine. Shop by "G-series" alone and you'll order the wrong parts.

The rule of thumb: the "M" models (M340i, M440i, M240i, X3/X4 M40i, Z4 M40i) get the 382 hp O1. The luxury 40i models get the 335 hp M1. The Z4 M40i uses the O1 in the US and the M1 in markets under EU emissions rules.
Gen 3 (B58B30M2)
These cars have a B58, but it's the newest version. Our car picker doesn't list Gen 3 yet, so check each part's fitment line before you order.

Toyota GR Supra 3.0

Every GR Supra 3.0 is a B58, and every one is Gen 2. In the US, 2020 cars made 335 hp and 2021+ cars made 382 hp. Toyota's 2026 MkV Final Edition keeps 382 hp in the US. The higher-output Final Edition went to other markets. The GR Supra 2.0 is a different engine (a four-cylinder), so B58 parts don't apply.
Head type matters on the Supra too. Forum reports say 2020 cars are "2-port" and 2021+ cars are "6-port," and upgrade turbos are made for one or the other. Start with the A90 Supra mods guide.

In the US, the Grenadier comes only with the BMW B58 petrol six, rated at about 282 hp. Other markets also get a diesel. The Grenadier's B58 is packaged very differently from a BMW or Supra, so intakes, downpipes and charge pipes for those cars don't carry over. On our site, a part fits the Grenadier only if it's listed for the Grenadier, like the Rival 4x4 rear differential skid plate.
Plug-in hybrids with a B58
BMW also pairs the B58 with an electric motor. These cars aren't in our car picker, and their hybrid hardware changes a lot of fitment, so ask us before ordering.

Cars people think have a B58 (but don't)
- BMW M2, M3, M4, X3 M, X4 M (G8X, F9X): these use the twin-turbo S58. It's related to the B58 but uses different parts. See our S58 parts page and the S58 mods guide.
- F-chassis 335i, 435i, M235i and the F87 M2: these came before the B58 and use earlier six-cylinder engines.
- 330i, 430i, 230i, M235i Gran Coupe, Z4 sDrive30i, GR Supra 2.0: four-cylinder engines.
How to confirm your engine
- Run your VIN. A BMW VIN decoder or your build sheet shows the engine code. B58B30M0 is Gen 1, B58B30M1 or B58B30O1 is Gen 2, and B58B30M2 is Gen 3.
- Don't trust the badge alone. A "540i" can be Gen 1, Gen 2 or Gen 3 depending on year. Changeover dates vary by market and build month, so treat model year as a starting point, not proof.
- Check the throttle body flange if you're under the hood. One parts maker notes Gen 1 uses a three-bolt flange and Gen 2 a two-bolt one. That's why charge pipes don't swap.

What cars have the B58 engine?
In the US: the BMW 340i, 440i, M240i, M340i, M440i, 540i, 640i GT, 740i, 840i, X3 M40i, X4 M40i, X5/X6/X7 40i, Z4 M40i, the X3 M50, the Toyota GR Supra 3.0 and the INEOS Grenadier petrol. Some BMW plug-in hybrids use it too.
Does the Toyota Supra have a BMW engine?
Yes. The GR Supra 3.0 uses the BMW B58, and every one is Gen 2. The GR Supra 2.0 uses a four-cylinder instead.
Is the 540i a B58?
Yes, since 2017. The 2017–2019 G30 540i is Gen 1, the 2020–2023 car is Gen 2, and the 2024+ G60 540i is Gen 3.
Is the B58 in the M3 or M4?
No. The G80 M3 and G82 M4 use the S58, a related but different twin-turbo engine. Parts are not interchangeable.
What engine does the INEOS Grenadier have?
In the US, the Grenadier has the BMW B58 3.0-liter turbo six, rated at about 282 hp. It's the only engine offered there.
