Short answer: The B58 filter is a paper cartridge in a plastic housing on top of the engine, under a cap you remove with a 32 mm socket. The oil drains from a plug in the pan. BMW's chart lists 6.25 liters (6.5 qt) for the Gen 1 F30 340i and 6.5 liters (6.9 qt) for the G30 540i and G12 740i, with 25 Nm (about 18 lb-ft) on both the drain plug and the filter cap. For Gen 2 (B58TU) cars, BimmerWorld lists about 6.5 liters (rear-drive) to 7.2 liters (xDrive). We didn't find a BMW torque figure for Gen 2. There's no dipstick, so you check the level in iDrive. Gen 2 manuals call for 0W-20 Longlife-17 FE+ or Longlife-14 FE+. Liqui Moly Top Tec 6600 0W-20 carries BMW's Longlife-17 FE+ approval.
I'm Gleb Blekher. I run B58 Racing out of Dallas, TX. The oil change is the most basic job on a B58, and it's still the one we get the most questions about: how much oil, what torque, why there's no dipstick, what to do when the filter breaks. This guide pulls together BMW's service bulletins and owner's manuals, Liqui Moly's product data and the parts catalogs. Where I couldn't confirm something, I say so.

The Gen 1 capacities come from BMW's oil quick-reference chart (SI B11 01 15). The Gen 2 numbers come from BimmerWorld's oil change kits. They aren't BMW figures, so treat them as a guide. In every case, put in a little less than the listed amount. Then finish with the oil level sensor (see Step 6).
Not sure which engine you have? Read our B58 Gen 1 vs Gen 2 guide first. Newer cars like the G60 540i and the G70 740i aren't covered here. Check the parts catalog for your VIN.
Which oil to use
We use and sell Liqui Moly engine oil. Match the BMW approval on the bottle to the one your car calls for, not just the viscosity.
What BMW calls for. BMW's oil chart, SI B11 01 15, lists 0W-20 Longlife-14 FE+ oil for the B58 from model year 2016 on. BMW's own owner's manuals changed over the years:
- A 2015-edition BMW manual for the F-series era lists Longlife-01, Longlife-01 FE and Longlife-14 FE+ for gasoline engines. It says Longlife-14 FE+ is "only suitable for particular gasoline motors," and allows grades from 0W-20 up to 5W-40. It isn't a B58 manual, so treat it as background.
- A 2021-edition G-series manual (X4) lists only Longlife-14 FE+ and Longlife-17 FE+, in SAE 0W-20.
- BimmerWorld describes 0W-20 Longlife-17 FE+ as the factory oil for 2016–2023 B58 engines. It also sells a 0W-30 Longlife-01 FE kit for Gen 2 cars.
Your own manual and the under-hood oil label have the final say.
The Liqui Moly products that match. Liqui Moly publishes these BMW approvals:
- Liqui Moly Top Tec 6600 0W-20. Approval: BMW Longlife-17 FE+. Our pick for any B58, Gen 1 or Gen 2, whose manual or under-hood label lists Longlife-17 FE+.
- Liqui Moly Special Tec B FE 0W-30. Approval: BMW Longlife-01 FE. For cars whose manual lists Longlife-01 FE. Liqui Moly says it was developed for gasoline cars without a gasoline particulate filter (GPF), from 2002 on. If your car has a GPF, ask us before you use it.
- Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40. Approval: BMW Longlife-01. Use it only if your car's manual lists Longlife-01 and allows 5W-40.
What we couldn't match. We didn't find a Liqui Moly oil that lists BMW Longlife-14 FE+. If your manual lists only Longlife-14 FE+, ask us before you buy. Liqui Moly's Top Tec 6200 0W-20 doesn't list a BMW approval at all. It's a VW/Porsche oil.
GR Supra owners: Toyota sets the oil spec for the Supra, not BMW. Follow the Toyota owner's manual and ask us which Liqui Moly oil matches it.
We sell Liqui Moly Top Tec 6600 0W-20 and Liqui Moly Special Tec B FE 0W-30 in 1 liter and 5 liter sizes. Not sure which one your car needs? Ask us.
What you need
Parts
- Oil filter. The MANN-FILTER HU 6022 z oil filter is the cartridge BMW fits from the factory. It replaces BMW 11428583898, 11427826799 and 11425B4C845 on Gen 1 and Gen 2 B58s, and it comes with a new cap O-ring. Our listing doesn't cover the GR Supra.
- Or a stainless-element alternative. The MMX performance replacement oil filter uses a pleated stainless steel element instead of paper. MMX says it filters to 20 microns. MMX says it does away with broken filter bases left in the housing. It lists Gen 1, Gen 2 and the GR Supra.
- Drain plug sealing ring. It's a one-time-use aluminum ring. BimmerWorld's BMW filter kits include the filter, the cap O-ring and the drain plug crush seal. If your filter comes without one, buy one separately. BimmerWorld lists the BMW drain plug 11137535106 (M12 x 1.5 x 16 mm) for Gen 2 cars.
- Engine oil. About 7 liters for most cars, 8 for a Gen 2 xDrive car.
Tools
- 32 mm socket (6-point is best) for the filter cap. BimmerWorld lists its 32 mm cap socket for the B58.
- Socket or wrench for the drain plug. We didn't confirm the size from a source we trust, so check yours before you start.
- Torque wrench that reads accurately at 25 Nm (about 18 lb-ft).
- Drain pan that holds at least 8 liters.
- Jack and jack stands, ramps or a lift. The car needs to end up level for the final oil level check.
- Torx or socket set for the underbody panel that covers the drain plug.
- Shop towels and nitrile gloves. The filter housing drips when you open it.
- Funnel.
Step-by-step: B58 oil change
Step 1: Warm up and prep
- Drive the car until the engine is warm, then park it. BMW's US maintenance booklet says engine oil "should be changed when the vehicle's engine is at operating temperature." Warm oil is also hot enough to burn you, so wear gloves.
- Raise the car safely on stands, ramps or a lift. Never work under a car held up only by a jack.
- Open the hood and find the filter housing. It's the tall black canister with the hex cap on the intake side of the engine, toward the back.
Step 2: Open the filter housing
BMW SIB 11 03 21 covers this step on all B58 variants. It says that on rare occasions the paper filter is hard to remove or breaks apart in the housing. The filter paper tears, and the lower plastic part stays stuck inside. BMW made an oil catch tool (83 30 5 A3B 354) that clamps to the housing to catch drips. The bulletin's method:
- Loosen the cap two turns counterclockwise, then stop.
- Tighten it two turns clockwise, then stop.
- Slowly lift the cap and filter out. They may come out together or separately.
- If the filter stays in the housing in one piece, grab it with a gloved hand or a towel. Turn it two turns counterclockwise while pulling outward, then two turns clockwise while pulling. Then try to pull it out.
- If the filter breaks apart and leaves its base in the housing, stop. BMW's instruction to dealers is to replace the complete oil filter housing. It says not to try to clean the fragments out. That's a much bigger job. See our B58 oil filter housing gasket guide.
You don't need BMW's tool. Pack shop towels around the housing and work slowly.
Step 3: Drain the oil
- Remove the underbody panel that covers the drain plug.
- Put the drain pan under the plug and remove the plug. Keep your hand clear. Hot oil comes out fast.
- Let it drain fully. Give it at least 10 to 15 minutes.
- Clean the plug and fit a new sealing ring. Never reuse the old ring.
- Refit the plug and torque it. BMW's chart gives 25 Nm (about 18 lb-ft) for the Gen 1 F30, G30 and G12. We didn't find a BMW figure for Gen 2 cars. Some online spec sites give other numbers, but none of them quotes BMW. If you have ISTA for your car, use its value.
Extracting instead of draining. Some shops pull the oil out from the top with a vacuum extractor. We didn't find a BMW procedure for doing this on the B58. We drain from the plug so the dirt at the bottom of the pan comes out too.
Step 4: Fit the new filter
- Take the old O-ring off the cap. Use a plastic pick so you don't scratch the groove.
- Fit the new O-ring. BMW's chart says to oil it lightly before you install the cap. Use a smear of fresh engine oil.
- Press the new filter into the cap or into the housing. It goes either way, as long as it's fully seated.
- Thread the cap on by hand. It should spin down easily. If it binds, back it off and start again.
- Torque the cap. BMW's chart gives 25 Nm (about 18 lb-ft) for the Gen 1 F30, G30 and G12. The SIB itself only says to torque the cap "to a repair instruction specification." We didn't find a BMW Gen 2 figure. Don't use the 40 Nm figures you'll see online. In the BMW chart we read, 40 Nm applies to V8 and V12 engines, not the B58. The cap is plastic, so too much torque can crack it.
- Wipe up any oil around the housing and on top of the engine.
Step 5: Refill
- Lower the car so it sits level.
- Open the filler cap on the valve cover and add oil with a funnel.
- Put in a little less than the full amount first. Use about 6 liters for a car listed at 6.25 to 6.5 liters, and about 6.5 liters for a Gen 2 xDrive car listed at about 7.2 liters. It's easy to add more and hard to take it out.
- Close the filler cap and start the engine. Check under the car for drips at the plug and around the filter housing.
Step 6: Check the level with the oil sensor
The B58 has no dipstick. An electronic sensor measures the oil level, and you read it in iDrive.
- Gen 1 (F-series iDrive): A 2015-edition BMW 2 Series manual gives the menu as Vehicle info > Vehicle status > Measure engine oil level > Start measurement. It takes about a minute. Your car's menu names may differ slightly.
- Gen 2 (G-series iDrive): A 2021-edition BMW X4 manual gives CAR > Vehicle status > Engine oil level > Engine oil measurement > Start measurement. Idle speed rises a little during the test.
Both manuals require a level car, a warm engine at idle, and P or N with your foot off the gas. So drive first, then measure on level ground. BMW also notes the normal oil level display needs about 30 minutes of driving to show a current value.
- Top up in small amounts and measure again. Stop as soon as the scale reads full.
- Don't overfill. BMW's manual warns that too much oil "can damage the engine or the catalytic converter." It says to have the level corrected by a shop if you overfill.
Step 7: Reset the service reminder
- Reset the engine oil service in the car's service menu. The steps vary by car and iDrive version, so check your owner's manual. If you skip this step, the car keeps counting down from the old service.
Oil change interval: BMW's schedule vs. a tuned or track car
BMW's interval. The B58 uses Condition Based Service (CBS). The car tracks the oil service by date and by miles, and tells you when it's due. BMW's 2019 US maintenance booklet lists "Every 2nd engine oil service (approx. 20,000 mi)." That works out to roughly 10,000 miles per oil service on a typical car. CBS can bring the date forward depending on how you drive.
Tuned and track cars. More boost, more heat and track sessions are hard on oil. BimmerWorld recommends a 5,000-mile interval on its B58 oil change kits. That's what we'd use on any tuned B58, or any car that sees the track or sits in Texas summer traffic. On a track car, also change it after a hard weekend, whatever the mileage. An oil analysis will tell you whether your interval suits how you drive.
Upgrades worth doing at an oil change. The plastic filter cap and housing are known weak spots on the B58. You're already in there, so it's a good time to replace them:
- The VTT magnetic billet oil filter housing cap replaces the plastic cap. Its built-in magnet catches fine metal particles. It fits Gen 1, Gen 2 and the GR Supra.
- The MMX billet oil filter housing replaces the whole plastic housing with CNC-machined 6061 aluminum and has its own pressure bypass valve. It fits Gen 1, Gen 2 and the GR Supra. Fitting it is a housing gasket job, not an oil change. See our oil filter housing gasket guide.
For more on what fails on these engines, read B58 common problems. BMW's maintenance booklet lists spark plugs as a job done together with an oil service, so check if yours are due. See our B58 spark plugs and coils guide.
Common mistakes
- Yanking the filter out. A paper filter that has sat in hot oil for 10,000 miles can tear. Follow BMW's two-turns-out, two-turns-in method and go slowly. If the base breaks off and stays in the housing, BMW's fix is a new housing.
- Reusing the drain plug sealing ring or the cap O-ring. Both come with most filter kits. Use the new ones every time.
- Dry O-ring on the cap. BMW says to oil it lightly. A dry O-ring can twist or tear as the cap goes down.
- Over-tightening the plastic cap. Use a torque wrench. BMW's chart gives 25 Nm for Gen 1. The 40 Nm figures online are for other engines.
- Pouring in the full amount from the chart. Capacities vary by car and drivetrain, and some oil stays in the engine. Add less, then use the sensor.
- Checking the level cold or on a slope, then overfilling. The reading only counts warm and level, and BMW warns extra oil can damage the engine or catalytic converter.
- Buying oil by viscosity alone. A bottle that says 0W-20 isn't automatically right. Look for the BMW approval your manual lists, such as Longlife-17 FE+.
FAQ
How much oil does a B58 take?
BMW's oil chart lists 6.25 liters (6.5 qt) for the Gen 1 F30 340i, and 6.5 liters (6.9 qt) for the G30 540i and G12 740i. For Gen 2 cars, BimmerWorld lists about 6.5 liters for rear-drive cars and about 7.2 liters for xDrive cars. Add a little less than the listed amount, then use the oil level sensor to finish.
What oil filter does the B58 use?
A cartridge filter, BMW 11428583898, 11427826799 or 11425B4C845, depending on the car and catalog. The MANN-FILTER HU 6022 z replaces all three on Gen 1 and Gen 2 B58s.
What is the B58 oil filter cap and drain plug torque?
BMW's chart gives 25 Nm (about 18 lb-ft) for both on the Gen 1 F30, G30 and G12, with the cap O-ring lightly oiled. We didn't find a BMW figure for Gen 2. If you have ISTA for your car, use its value. The cap takes a 32 mm socket.
What oil does BMW recommend for the B58?
BMW's 2016-on oil chart lists 0W-20 Longlife-14 FE+ for the B58. BMW's 2021-edition G-series manual lists Longlife-14 FE+ and Longlife-17 FE+ in 0W-20. Check your own manual and the under-hood label. The Liqui Moly oil with the BMW Longlife-17 FE+ approval is Top Tec 6600 0W-20. Ask us for it.
How often should I change the oil on a B58?
CBS will tell you, and on a typical car that's roughly every 10,000 miles. On a tuned car, a track car, or one that sees a lot of heat and stop-and-go traffic, change it about every 5,000 miles. That's the interval BimmerWorld recommends.
What if the oil filter breaks in the housing?
BMW SIB 11 03 21 tells dealers to replace the complete oil filter housing. It says not to try to fish the fragments out. A filter with a stainless element, like the MMX replacement filter, is MMX's answer to that problem.
